Good luck to the bride

I just love the tradition of giving the bride a horsehoe for luck - the youngest cousin would have the very important job of presenting a horsehoe made of lace and ribbons to the bride at the reception. It’s cute, it’s symbolic, it’s pretty, but you know, on that happy wedding day you have no idea how much you will need all the good wishes, the support of family and friends and the love of each other. A horseshoe brimming with all the hope for just that little bit of luck to help get you through is a really happy thought.

Lucky horseshoe. Bridal appliqué block.

This is an easy applique block which can be customised to suit yourself. It is made using fusible applique, but could be easily appliqued by any other method. Additional motifs could be added. for example, i think it would be charming with flowers added inside the horseshoe or with the ribbon.

The hearts interlock, but that is easily done by snipping one of the hearts at the point where you want it to pass under the other heart. The join is then concealed and the hearts can be appliqued in place. Read on to see the detail of how you do this.

First, trace the image onto fusible web and iron to the back of your fabric. Cut out the heart shape.

Second: fold the heart in half and cut out the centre.

You now have a larger open heart and a smaller closed heart. Repeat for your second large heart.

Work out where you want the hearts to over lap and mark a snip line

Cut the heart along the line and conceal the edges underneath the other heart. you now have interlocking hearts.

Firstly, trace the heart pattern onto the paper side of fusible web. Secondly, fold each heart in half and cut out the centre. You will create two large open hearts and two smaller closed hearts. Use the placement diagram to arrange the hearts to your satisfaction. Where you want one heart to slide under the other is where you will snip it. Mark this point on the front of your heart. Snip through the heart. Place the snipped edges under the first heart. this is what makes your hearts interlock. Peel off the paper backing, place them on your background fabric and fuse into place.

This month there are some beautiful blocks on a wedding theme, perfect for that special day. Check out all the designers and their patterns.
