I designed this quilt to teach beginners. So you start off learning how to rotary cut and strip piece the log cabin blocks. Then we mix it up an you learn mock hand applique on the sewing machine with the baby starfish and the whales’ tails.

We then learn the basic blocks: fourpatch, half square triangles, quarter square triangles and flying geese. These are the basic building blocks of many many quilt patterns, and once mastered give you an enormous number of options for making quilts and designing your own patterns.

After this, we move up to the top row and learn two types of stars. The stars at the sides are based on squares and quarter square triangles, but the LeMoyne star in the centre has y seams and in this technique you learn how to make 3 seams that join at a point.

The next row is clamshells which I’ve turned upside down to look like ocean waves. This is a review of mock hand appliqué and gives new blocks to be made with the same technique.

Then we really mix it up with foundation paper piecing and curved piecing. Foundation paper piecing gives lovely accuracy on the sun’s rays, and curves and circles add another technique.

Now, this quilt is designed to be quilted in three sections to make it easier for those on a domestic machine. Three types of quilting are introduced: walking foot quilting; free motion quilting and ruler quilting. All the templates are included.

Because this pattern is really big and I teach it to beginners, I have split it into two books. The Angel’s Beach Quilt Pattern itself assumes the quilter knows basic techniques. The Quilting Notes book is made up of skillsheets and is a handy reference for all sorts of techniques, from setting up your machine for quilting or piecing or appliqué to various methods for half square triangles, to three methods for binding your quilt.

You can purchase the pattern from my patterns for sale. It comes as a digital download of 100 pages. It’s long because it’s detailed. If you are a beginner or would like some extra detailed instructions, I strongly suggest you also purchase the Quilting Notes book. It gives you helpful information on all sorts of things such as a cheatsheet on cutting sizes for half square triangles, quarter square triangles and flying geese, methods for binding your quilt, how to set up your machine for quilting, piecing or mock hand appliqué and so on. It’s about 70 pages long.
